How it works
One journey, seen from every side.
An externship is a supervised period of workplace experience where a student applies what they've learned in school. ExternFinder connects the people involved and manages each step — from finding an opportunity to completing the placement and potentially getting hired.
Prepare→Discover→Apply→Interview→Offer→Placement→Completion→Employment outcome
Each user sees the part relevant to their role. Every application has a single status, so the student, employer and school dashboards always agree.
| Stage | Student | Employer | School |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare | Builds profile, résumé and readiness checklist | Creates organization profile, posts externships | Invites students to roster, reviews preparation |
| Discover | Searches by program & distance, saves listings | Discovers candidates, invites them to apply | Finds sites, requests partnerships, suggests listings |
| Apply | Applies with profile and a note | Reviews, shortlists | Sees applications; approves or notes concerns |
| Interview | Confirms or asks to reschedule | Schedules, shares details, keeps notes | Sees upcoming interviews |
| Offer | Accepts or declines | Makes offer | Notified of offer and response |
| Placement & completion | Follows progress | Confirms start; records completion with pass / did-not-pass evaluation | Can record placement/completion if needed |
| Employment | Notified of hire | Records hire | Tracks extern-to-hire results |
Matching supports people — it doesn't decide
ExternFinder highlights relevant information: program fit, distance versus a student's travel range, readiness requirements and availability. It points out missing preparation and work that needs attention. Students, schools and employers remain responsible for placement and hiring decisions.
