Safety
How we help keep the externship marketplace trustworthy — and what to do if something feels wrong.
For students
- Look for the ✓ Verified badge and check the employer's profile and website.
- A legitimate externship never requires you to pay a fee, buy equipment from the employer, or share bank details, your Social Security number or passwords through messages.
- Meet for interviews at the healthcare site or by video arranged through ExternFinder, and tell your school coordinator about any placement before it starts.
- Your school's requirements and affiliation agreements still apply to every placement.
For employers and schools
- Only request personal information that is necessary for the placement, and handle it according to your own policies and applicable law.
- Do not share student information outside the people involved in the placement.
Report a concern
If a listing, organization or message seems suspicious or unsafe, use Report a problem and choose "Safety". Safety reports are prioritised by our team. In an emergency, contact local emergency services first.
